Can You Join a NYC Private Club Without a Sponsor?
By the Membrsonly team · 6 October 2026

You do not necessarily need a personal introduction to begin researching or applying to a NYC private club. Several clubs publish application or enquiry routes. But an open form is not evidence of automatic admission, and it does not establish that referrals are irrelevant.
The useful distinction is between starting an application yourself and satisfying every admission requirement. Below are clubs with a public route to start the conversation, alongside what their published information actually confirms.
Moss: a direct application
Moss’s FAQ links to its application and states that acceptance is not guaranteed. It does not list a mandatory sponsor in that FAQ. That supports starting directly; it does not promise admission or mean the club will never request further information.

Maxwell Social: interviews rather than instant entry
Maxwell offers a direct cohort application and describes four interviews to assess mutual fit. New members join small onboarding dinners over three months. Its public membership page does not state a mandatory sponsor. Be ready to explain how you would participate, and ask what the next cohort’s process requires.

Spring Place: enquire about the right membership level
Spring Place publishes a membership route and offers tours. This gives prospective members a way to enquire without first arranging a member introduction. Confirm eligibility and any references directly; also clarify whether your plan includes the workspaces, dining or programming you intend to use.

Flyfish Club: application means waitlist consideration
Flyfish’s public page accepts applications for its waitlist because membership is at capacity. It does not advertise guaranteed entry or publish a sponsor rule there. Ask what references, eligibility and timing apply to your chosen tier.

What to ask when sponsorship is unclear
A short enquiry can be more useful than guessing: “Can I apply without knowing a current member? Are recommendations required, optional or requested later? What does the review involve, and is there a waitlist?” Ask through the club’s official route rather than relying on someone selling access.
If a sponsor is required, clarify the relationship expected. A sponsor may have to know you personally and stand behind the application; purchasing an introduction is not a substitute for meeting the club’s rules.
Visiting and joining are different
A booked service can sometimes let you experience a place without membership. Remedy Place explicitly welcomes nonmembers for individual experiences. That is a separate route from recurring membership, not a way around another club’s admissions process.
